GOVERNOR EMPHASISES EDUCATION IN MOTHER TONGUE
The Hon'ble Shri Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar emphasized importance of mother tongue in education and said that the New Education Policy of the Central Government gives due credence to learning in native tongues. He was speaking after releasing a biography of John Matthai, India's first Railway Minister (Post-Independence) and then Finance Minister, who also served as Vice Chancellor of University of Kerala. The book, titled 'Honest John' is authored by Shri Bakhtiar K. Dadabhoy was released by the Hon'ble Governor at a function jointly organized by Universities of Calicut and Kerala in Lok Bhavan today. It is easy to learn English, but not to learn in English, the Governor said.
Recalling John Matthai's contributions as an Educationist and Economist, the Governor observed that Matthai was a man of great honesty and integrity and that the contributions of many Malayalees including Sir V.P. Menon have not been adequately reflected in the post independent history of the nation.
Six new Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) designed by the Electronic Media and Mass Communication Research Centre (EMMRC) of the University of Calicut were also launched during the occasion. These programmes aim to expand access to quality higher education through flexible, technology-enabled learning and to ensure that more research papers and documents by Indian students are made available online through the Open Access format. The One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) scheme of the Central Government provide access to thousands of journals and research papers for students, faculty and researches across institutions of higher education in the country.
Shri Bakhtiar K. Dadabhoy, the author of the book, Dr. Devika Madalli, Director, INFLIBNET, Dr. P. Raveendran, Vice Chancellor, University of Calicut, Dr. Mohanan Kunnummal, Vice Chancellor, University of Kerala, Shri Vivek Matthai, Grand-son of John Matthai were the other dignitaries who were present on the occasion.

മാതൃഭാഷയിൽ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ആര്ജ്ജിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യം വളരെ വലുതാണെന്നും, കേന്ദ്ര സർക്കാരിന്റെ പുതിയ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ നയം തദ്ദേശഭാഷകളിൽ പഠനം നടത്തുന്നതിന് മുന്തിയ പ്രാധാന്യം ഉറപ്പാക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്നും ബഹു. ഗവർണർ ശ്രീ രാജേന്ദ്ര വിശ്വനാഥ് ആർലേക്കർ അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടു. സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യാനന്തര ഭാരതത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യ റെയില്വേ മന്ത്രിയായും, തുടര്ന്ന് ധനകാര്യ മന്ത്രിയായും, കേരള സർവകലാശാലയുടെ വൈസ് ചാൻസിലറായും സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള ഡോ. ജോൺ മത്തായിയുടെ, ശ്രീ ഭക്തിയാർ കെ. ദാദാബായ് തയ്യാറാക്കിയ 'ഹോണസ്റ്റ് ജോൺ' എന്ന ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ജീവചരിത്രഗ്രന്ഥം പുറത്തിറക്കി സംസാരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു ഗവര്ണര്.
ഡോ. ജോൺ മത്തായിയുടെ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ, സാമ്പത്തിക മേഖലകളിലെ സംഭാവനകളെ സ്മരിച്ച ഗവർണർ, അദ്ദേഹം അഴിമതിയുടെ കറപുരളാത്തയാളും ഉന്നതമായ കൃത്യനിഷ്ഠ കാത്തുസൂക്ഷിച്ചയാളുമായിരുന്നുവെന്നും, സ്വാതന്ത്യാനന്തര ദേശീയചരിത്രത്തിൽ ശ്രീ വി.പി. മേനോൻ ഉൾപ്പെടെ ഇത്തരത്തിലുള്ള നിരവധി മലയാളികളുടെ സംഭാവനകൾ വേണ്ടത്ര അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടില്ലായെന്നും ഓര്മ്മിപ്പിച്ചു.
കലിക്കറ്റ് സർവകലാശാലയിലെ ഇലക്ട്രോണിക് മീഡിയ ആന്റ് മാസ് കമ്മ്യൂണിക്കേഷൻ റിസർച്ച് സെന്റർ (EMMRC) രൂപകൽപ്പന ചെയ്ത ആറ് Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) പരിപാടികളും ഈ വേളയിൽ ബഹു. ഗവർണർ പുറത്തിറക്കി. സുതാര്യവും സാങ്കേതിക-വിദ്യാധിഷ്ഠിതവുമായ പഠനത്തിലൂടെ ഗുണമേന്മയുള്ള ഉയർന്ന വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം കൂടുതൽ ആളുകൾക്ക് ലഭ്യമാക്കുക എന്നതാണ് ഈ പദ്ധതികളുടെ ലക്ഷ്യം. ഇന്ത്യൻ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ തയ്യാറാക്കുന്ന ഗവേഷണ പ്രബന്ധങ്ങളും പഠനരേഖകളും 'ഓപ്പൺ ആക്സസ് സംവിധാനത്തിലൂടെ' ലോകത്താകെ ലഭ്യമാക്കുന്നതിനും ഈ സംരംഭം വഴി സാധ്യമാണ്. കേന്ദ്ര സർക്കാരിന്റെ 'വൺ നേഷൻ വൺ സബ്സ്ക്രിപ്ഷൻ (ONOS)' പദ്ധതിയിലൂടെ രാജ്യത്തെ സർവകലാശാലകളിലും ഉന്നത വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളിലുമുള്ള വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്കും അധ്യാപകർക്കും ഗവേഷകർക്കും, ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് ജേർണലുകളും ഗവേഷണ പ്രബന്ധങ്ങളും സൗജന്യമായി ലഭ്യമാകുന്നു.
