Governor Harvests Crops at Lok Bhavan

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar personally led the harvest of crops cultivated at the Raj Bhavan premises, turning the Governor's residence into a thriving model farm.
On the five-acre plot where farming was taken up on a large scale, the Governor appeared visibly delighted to see the rich yield. As he plucked spinach, he inquired about the variety and asked about the differences between red spinach and green spinach. While cutting a pumpkin from among the sprawling vines, he wanted to know which dishes it could be used in. When he picked some brown beans, he wondered if it was the same type he had eaten for lunch that day.
A variety of vegetables are now ready for harvest — snake gourd, spinach, drumstick, ash gourd, pumpkin, cucumber, perennial brinjal, cabbage, brinjal, long beans, tapioca, green chilli, and sweet potato. The Governor said he felt proud to see his vision of transforming Lok Bhavan into a productive vegetable garden becoming a reality.
During the visit, he also tasted water from a freshly picked bottle gourd and ate ripe padathi fruit (a local variety).
Before Onam, the Governor had wished to distribute vegetable kits from this farm to all Lok Bhavan staff. However, heavy rains affected the plan, allowing only spinach, beans, and ladies finger to be included in the Onam kits.
Among the crops, beans occupy the largest area — 400 planting pits across three varieties. There are 300 banana plants (Rasakathali variety) and 250 tapioca pits as well. Vegetables like ladies finger, green chilli, perennial brinjal and others have been planted in plots of about 10 cents each.
Governor Arlekar drew inspiration from a successful farming experiment he initiated while serving as the Governor of Bihar. The project also aims to effectively utilize the service and effort of Lok Bhavan staff. A supervisor from the Agriculture Department has been appointed to oversee the work. Proper maintenance has resulted in a remarkably good yield.

അമ്പതേക്കര് വരുന്ന ഭൂമിയില് വ്യാപകമായി കൃഷിയിറക്കിയതിന്റെ ഫലം കൊയ്യാന് എത്തിയ ഗവര്ണര്ക്ക് മികച്ച വിളവ് കണ്ടപ്പോള് അതിയായ സന്തോഷം. ചീര പിഴുതെടുത്ത ആര്ലേക്കര് ഇനം ഏതാണെന്നും ചോദിച്ചു. ചുവന്ന ചീരയും പച്ച ചീരയും തമ്മിലുള്ള ഗുണവ്യത്യാസവും ആരാഞ്ഞു. വള്ളിപ്പടര്പ്പിനുള്ളില് നിന്ന് 'മത്തന്' കുത്തിയെടുത്ത ഗവര്ണര്ക്ക് ഇത് ഏതൊക്കെ കറികളില് ഉപയോഗിക്കാമെന്നറിയണമെന്നതായിരുന്നു. ബ്രൗണ് നിറത്തിലുള്ള പയര് നുള്ളിയെടുത്തപ്പോള് 'ഇത് ഇന്നുച്ചയ്ക്ക് കഴിച്ച ഇനമല്ലേ?' എന്ന സംശയം അദ്ദേഹം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചു.
പടവലം, ചീര, മുരിങ്ങ, നെയ്യ്ക്കുമ്പളം, മത്തന്, വെള്ളരി, നിത്യ വഴുതന, കാബേജ്, കത്രിക്ക, നീളപ്പയര്, കപ്പ, പച്ചമുളക്, മധുരക്കിഴങ്ങ്... എല്ലാം വിളവുപ്രായമായി നില്ക്കുമ്പോള് ലോക്ഭവനെ കാര്ഷികോദ്യാനമാക്കാനുള്ള തന്റെ തീരുമാനം യാഥാര്ത്ഥ്യമായതിന്റെ അഭിമാനത്തിലാണ് ഗവര്ണര്.
കൃഷിത്തോട്ടം നടന്ന് കണ്ട ഗവര്ണര് വളപ്പില്നിന്ന് പറിച്ചെടുത്ത ഗൗളീഗാത്രത്തിന്റെ വെള്ളം കുടിക്കുകയും പടത്തിപ്പഴം തിന്നുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ഓണത്തിനുമുമ്പ് വിളവെടുത്ത് ലോക്ഭവനിലെ മുഴുവന് ജീവനക്കാര്ക്കും പച്ചക്കറി കിറ്റ് നല്കണമെന്നായിരുന്നു ഗവര്ണറുടെ ആഗ്രഹം. മഴ ചതിച്ചതിനാല് പൂര്ണ്ണമായി സാധ്യമായില്ല. ചീര, പയര്, വെണ്ട തുടങ്ങിയ ഇനങ്ങള് മാത്രമേ ഓണക്കിറ്റില് നല്കാനായുള്ളു.
കൃഷിത്തോട്ടത്തില് ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല് പയറാണ്. മൂന്ന് ഇനങ്ങളിലായി 400 മൂട് പയറുണ്ട്. രസകദളി വാഴ 300 ഉം കപ്പ 250 മൂടും നട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. വെണ്ട, മുളക്, നിത്യ വഴുതന, പച്ചമുളക് തുടങ്ങിയവ 10 സെന്റ് വീതം സ്ഥലങ്ങളില് നട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.
ബീഹാറില് ഗവര്ണറായിരിക്കേയുള്ള പരീക്ഷണ വിജയത്തിന്റെ പ്രചോദനത്തിലാണ് കേരളത്തിലെ കാര്ഷികയജ്ഞത്തിന് ആര്ലേക്കര് മുന്കൈ എടുത്തത്. ജീവനക്കാരുടെ അധ്വാനവും സേവനവും കാര്യക്ഷമമായി പ്രയോജനപ്പെടുത്തുക എന്ന ലക്ഷ്യവും പിന്നിലുണ്ട്. മേല്നോട്ടത്തിനായി കൃഷിവകുപ്പില്നിന്നുള്ള സൂപ്പര്വൈസറെ നിയോഗിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. കൃത്യമായ പരിപാലനം മികച്ച വിളവ് നല്കാന് കാരണമായി.
